Some Fundamental Skills

trainingAlthough Mountain Biking is an exciting action sport that can and should be enjoyed by anyone who knows how to ride a bike, the truth is that it does involve some sort of a danger factor. Compared to traditional road cycling, mountain biking is quite a bit more aggressive and quite a bit more rugged, if not only for the terrain but for the sheer nature of the sport. Cutting in and out of trees while making your way down a steep descent takes, not only nerves of steel, but also certain fundamental skills that are just not required in traditional road cycling.

    I think that you have to really understand your limits and of course never doubt them, but be totally aware of and honest about them. Like so many physical sports it can be easy to lose focus. Never quite realized how much focus was required in mountain biking until I tried it myself. Once only, but after ending up under the bike, slammed against a tree, struggling just to stand up, I just wasn’t sure I could do it. I have been thrown by horses and motorcyles, but the mountain biking experience actually put fear in me. I admire those that can do it.
