Series 1 Race Video

Once again we are in the heart of race season and we are off to a good start. The season only gets better and the fields get harder as everyone gets into racing shape and really start to mix it up out there. Here is a short compilation of a few of the earlier races in Michigan.

Getting The Mud Off

For many of us in the Great White North, our mountain biking season has really just begun. And unless you were doing some winter training like we suggested, you are probably pretty anxious to get out and ride your bikes and train. Rain or shine.  Unfortunately for mountain biking, this time of year can be really wet and muddy. I don’t mind riding in the mud so much as I do the fact that I have to really clean my bike after every ride.

Stop “Cardio” Training For Mountain Biking!

By James P Wilson

Let me ask you a question – Do you want better cardio? Or do you want to be able to ride harder, faster and longer on the trail? Think these two goals are the same thing? Perhaps not…

One of the toughest things I face when bringing new and improved training concepts to the mountain biking world is trying to work around the large amount of confusion that surround certain terms. For example, when you use the terms “aerobic training” and “cardio training” interchangeably then my call to avoid excessive aerobic training seems odd.

Drum Hike; One Man, One Mission

Since the beginning of time, there have people in this world, who have always needed some one to make sure they stayed in line, to keep them in check.  These “said” people have always been a threat to our way of life and have always needed to be bullies to get what they want.  The people they have threatened and have been bullying around have always had the need to be protected and watched over by others.  What was left was a select few who have taken it upon themselves, for the most part, to be a part of something greater than themselves. Winter Indoor Training

Article: T.Stone

Over the last couple of weeks I have been talking a lot about how much training we have been doing to get ready for this upcoming race season. A couple of hours on the trainer here and there just isn’t going to cut it.  In order to get ready both physically and mentally you really have to have a good training schedule set up so that you can track your performance and work on your strengths and most of all work really hard on your weaknesses.  Over the last several weeks we have been working on our base building to get our legs, lungs, heart and brain ready to get beat down and then get built back up. Mountain Bike Racing For One And All

icemanstartAll over the mountain biking community there are average everyday folks that just love to ride. Present company included.
Twisted Stone is about bringing mountain biking into the mainstream which includes your average Joe and Joanne’s of the world.

Not very long ago I thought that mountain biking was just a sport that was for the elite riders, and the expert riders of the world. Turns out, there are many, many more of us Average Joe’s, than there are of them. Granted, the elite and expert riders still corner the market on winning the big races, but who cares. We are all out here to have fun and get in shape, so what better way then to mountain bike. (more…)

Winter Mountain Biking Tips

Winter riding gearAlthough every season is most likely more ideal for mountain biking than winter, there is really no reason not to ride your bike through the coldest season of the year. Mountain biking in cold weather has always been a challenge, but for the adventurous at heart it certainly has its place. For many people winter brings with it, high winds, wet trails and in many cases a lot of snow. For the most part, the last place you want to be, especially in a northern winter, is outside and on your bike. (more…)

Iceman Cometh and Iceman Goeth

icemanWritten by: Will Baker

The 20th ICEMAN took off Saturday under some of the best conditions possible. Temps were 50′s in the morning and 60′s by the afternoon Pro start. This was great weather for racing, spectating, and beer drinking.

In years past the race has been delayed due to blizzards, raced in sleet, rain, and 15″ of snow, giving this years race the nickname “Niceman”.

Bigger Wheels Are Prevailing in Mountain Biking

29erBy: Chris Morris

Mountain bike traditionalists have had a hard time accepting the 29er. The 29er rolls big over the trail and makes going over rocky and rooty terrain much easier than a regular sized mountain bike. What may take a good deal of finesse to make it over difficult terrain on regular mountain bike is made much easier on a 29er.

The Frozen Trails of Winter

2008_Iceman_Cometh_Challenge_XC_1-758924As I sit here watching our mountain bike season come to a close I realize that things are going to get tougher and tougher as the winter goes on. Days are going to get shorter and riding a couple of hours a day on the trainer is not my idea of a fun filled afternoon. I understand that training all winter indoors is a major part of the sport, I’m just saying that I’m not looking forward to it.

It’s All Downhill From Here

As you all may know or not know, I am from an area in Northern Michigan that is highly admired for it’s display of natural grace and beauty.  Surrounded by fresh water lakes and acres of forests, this small town can hold its own against any resort area in this country and beyond. However, hundreds of miles of shorelines and  all of the picturesque vistas are no match for the hundreds of miles of trails and natural preserve we have up here.

Race Day

dirt trailAs expected the weather was not going to be our friend today. I woke up early enough to make sure I was able to get down to the mountain in time to register, set up, check my bike and warm up before the race. When I left the house at zero dark thirty, I knew the day was going to be wet, cold and down right miserable, with a side of “Meatballs”. (meatballs not included)
